Album You Should Own By Now - The Virgins

The Black Kids + The Strokes = The Virgins

I first heard of The Virgins on Jimmy Fallon. They performed a while back and really impressed me. I decided to cop the album. It was definitely a good idea. The album is full of catchy, poppy and infectious tracks.

When I first started listening to the album I immediately thought they sounded like The Strokes, if the Strokes performed in the '80's. This album is perfect to blast at full volume with all your windows down crusiging down the highway....or just on your ipod. Either way, good.

Let the Virgins give you a soundtrack to your upcoming Summer. I know I will.

Enjoy.

Album You Should Own By Now - Rilo Kiley

Rilo Kiley - Under The Blacklight

I first reviewed this album on my old site, HERE. Notice how pretentious it was. "The layers were a treat to hear...", ass.

Under The Blacklight has silently slipped into the category of "album I can listen to at any time". There are albums I love but I really have to be in the mood to listen to, like 2gether, but this album I find myself listening to often. I can't really get sick of it.

Jenny Lewis is aa awesome singer & actress. The CD is full of great songs and you can put it on and listen to the whole thing without skipping. Plus, the songs are all about crazy topics..."15" is about a dude bangin a 15 year old chick, and"The Money Maker" is about strippers, so dudes, don't worry about listening to a band with a female lead singer. She's bad ass. This CD truly is amazing. Please check it out.

Plus the guitar player is "Joey The Rat" from Boy Meets World.

M.I.A shot back at the media when they reported her newborns name as Ickit. TMZ has recently learned the babys actual name is Ikhyd, and she is actually 33 years old not 31 as biel....WAIT! WHAT!....Ikhyd? (sigh)

Justin Timberlake is releasing his own line of Tequila, named 901. Let me get this straight. I'm supposed to buy booze from the only man on earth who doesnt need booze to help him get laid? Screw that.

Jordin Sparks has told the media that she is ready for "Jonas Brothers romance rumors" since she will be on tour with them all summer. ROFFLE. The only way Jordin Sparks will be linked to a Jonas Bro is if one of them starts bangin' a stripper/porno "actress" named Jordin Sparks. [Side Note: There has to be a porn star named Jordan Sparks, right? It sounds to perfect]

Battle Of The (Late Night) Bands: Ra Ra Riot

Ra Ra Riot - "Can You Tell" via Craig Ferguson
(Via Stereogum)

I've heard of Ra Ra Riot but haven't ever heard their music, or at least it wasn't good enough for me to remember. I was going back and forth between Ra Ra Riot and the AAR (that's All American Rejects for the non super fans) but ultimately decided Ra Ra Riot was less likely to be played while two guys banged. (Not that there's anything wrong with that, naturally) So they won.

Tomorrow's lineup looks relatively bleak, so I might skip it. Friday has three good acts so I might just post all of those Friday. We'll see.

MC Hammer is set to star in his own reality show. I really wish the show will be called "MC Hammer: You Can't Film This".

U2 will have a street named after them in NYC. Don't worry about buying new maps, the street originally had no name. [To easy?]

In an interview, The Jonas Brothers said they would like their own video game. I guess no one told them there's already a video game based on them. Its called "Rockband". The game where anyone can play an instrument and become a "rockstar" even if they have no talent. ZING!

Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are scheduled to play together again for charity. When asked what it will be like to play with Ringo again Paul said "Who?".

M.I.A. denies naming her new baby "Ickitt". However, she can never deny wearing THIS.

Tom Morello has released the name for his new musical project, Street Sweeper. Or as I will refer to them, NOT Rage Against The Machine.

Battle Of The (Late Night) Bands: The Virgins

I had a genius idea yesterday. I'm going to try and post a clip of the best band/performance from all the late night talk shows. The shows include: Jimmy Fallon, Conan (returns June 1st), Letterman, Kimmel, Carson Daly (Yes, he is still on), Leno, and Craig Ferguson. I hope to make this a daily feature plus it's a good way to find new music. The first winner of "Batle of The (Late Night) Bands" is: The Virgins. Album You Should Own By Now - Black Kids

Black Kids - Partie Traumatic

You may or may not have heard of the Black Kids, but if you have its mostly how Pitchfork threw them under the bus. Pitchfork hyped the crap out of the Black Kids for months and months before their debut album came out, Partie Traumatic. Then once the album came out Pitchfork gave the album a 3.3/10 and the review consisted of no words. It was just a picture of two sad looking dogs with the words "Sorry :-/" written on top of the pix. You can see the "review" HERE.

I heard about the Pitchfork review and decided to check out the album. How bad could it be? Honestly? It's pretty awesome. The Black Kids have a very unique/retro '80's sound. If you want a fun album to rock out to this summer, try Partie Traumatic.

The album only has one or two weak tracks but the rest are all great. Here are two of my favorites:

Album You Should Own By Now - Adele

Adele - 19
(Amy Winehouse - Drugs) + Kate Nash = Adele
[Pronounced: A Dell. As in, I Want to get a new computer maybe A DELL]

When random artists win Grammys it never really makes me take notice. However, when Adele won "Best New Artist" I went out and got her album. No real reason. I was just looking to get some new music so I figured I'd give Adele a try. This may have been the best thing I've done all year. I got the album a couple weeks ago and I haven't stopped listening. Believe me when I tell you this, every song on 19 is amazing. Granted, some guys who have problems with their masculinity may not be man enough to listen to this album. Screw 'em, their loss.

Adele mixes great singing and great pop songs into a monster album. A lot of times when you listen to a female singer the songs are boring and are just a way to show off singing ability. Adele shows off her voice but leaves you with catchy songs that won't leave your head. If you've heard any Adele song it's probably her first single "Chasing Pavements". That song gives you a good feel for the rest of the album. If you like that song than definitely get this album. If you don't like that song than check yourself for a pulse.

"Chasing Pavements" [Sorry for the asian subtitles. Only version I could find to embed]

TV On The Radio(head)

Radiohead is overrated

There. I said it. Get over it. Radiohead is basically a one hit wonder. "Creep" is good, that's it. Sorry music nerds, it's the truth. You probably think I'm insane, but I will try to explain to you why I feel this way....and what it has to do with TV On The Radio.

Some bands are only liked by fans because they're mainstream with out being "mainstream". Radiohead's music is on the radio and Radiohead is in the news, but you never really see them do interviews so they're "mysterious". A Radiohead fan can mold the band into whatever they want them to be because they don't know much about them.

There is also a very slim chance members of Radiohead are going to get caught doing something awful in the tabloids. So fans will never have to worry about having to explain to friends why their favorite band is doing blow with Tila Tequilla on the cover of US Weekly. Fans never have to worry about Radiohead losing credibility. This point is especially big for hipsters. They love feeling/being pretentious. It would be hard to justify liking Radiohead if they just performed a duet with Miley Cyrus on the MTV Music Awards.

Liking Radiohead will also gain you instant music credibility. If you are asked "what are some bands you listen to" and you answer "Radiohead" you are perceived to know "good music". The reason for this is because no one will admit that Radiohead's music isn't that great. Because everyone is afraid to admit that they don't really "get" Radiohead it has just become accepted over time that they are good, and no one can be convinced other wise.

Why am i writing a post to tell you all this? The newest member in the overrated band Hall Of Fame is TV On The Radio. Their latest album Dear Science, was hailed as one of the best albums of last year by numerous publications. I've listened to the album. I've even listened to their first album.

I don't get it!

I realized this upon seeing TV On The Radio on SNL a couple weeks ago. They were awful. You can watch the performances HERE. I know they have claimed that they had sound problems but I don't believe it. You know who else had sound problems on SNL....Ashlee Simpson, and everyone wanted her to give up music for the rest of her life. Not even making music, people wanted her to even stop listening to music. People tried to ban her from experiencing music, they only wanted her to feel for vibrations like a deaf person. Brutal.

So, congrats TV On The Radio, you are now weird enough that people automatically just claim your amazing because they don't want to be the only one to say "I don't get it".

Plus people(READ: white people) won't say black people who play instruments aren't good. How many of your friends like The Roots? How many of your friends actually have any of their albums or could name more than two Roots songs? Exactly.

They even have Patrick Stump, lead singer of Fall Out Boy, singing the chourus, and you don't have Patrick Stump on as a guest for his singing abilities. Ya feel me. This song can still be found on iTunes as a bonus track.

Kate Nash - "Made Of Bricks"
(Jenny Lewis + British accent) x (Snarky lyrics / Lily Allen) = Kate Nash

I randomly posted one of Kate Nash's songs, "Mouthwash", as a "Video Of The Day" last week, and it made me remember how much I enjoyed her album. Kate Nash became famous due to the strength of her first single "Foundations", which really is the strongest song on the album. She also became well known for her popularity on MySpace, which helped her land a music deal.

Her songs are mellow but poppy and have wonderful stream of consciousness type lyrics. The majority of the album is very tight with only one or two skippable songs. Enjoy.

Album You Should Own By Now - Q-Tip

Q-Tip - "The Renaissance"

(A Tribe Called Quest - superfluous material)^2 x (Critical Acclaim + 9 Year Hiatus) = The Renaissance

Chances are you were unaware this album was released, but chances are you will love it. In a time of ringtone rap songs and rappers not being able to actually rap, Q-Tip has released a masterpiece. Its rare anytime an artist releases a "whole album". Most likely there are 2 or 3, or 4 if you're lucky, good songs. The Renaissance probably has only 1 or 2 bad songs. Bad being relative to the rest fo the album.

I posted ManWomanboogie as a Video Of The Day a week ago so i'll post a different song here, but ManWomanboogie is one of the best tracks on the album.

Grammy Bowl III: The Results - Josh gets Rihanna'd

The results are in.....and I slaughtered Josh. This beating is worse than when they round up five white guys to "play" the Harlem Globetrotters. After three years, Josh and I are officially tied, 1-1-1. This year we picked 15 different awards. I ended up getting 8 of 15 and Josh got a measly 5 of 15. 4 of Joshs picks I also picked. You could say, Josh only got 1 pick correct.
Here is how it breaks down:

My Correct Picks:
Album Of The Year (Plant & Krauss)
Record of The Year (Plant & Krauss)
Song of the Year (Coldplay)
Best New Artist (Adele)
Best R&B Album (Jennfier Hudson)
Best Rap ALbum (Lil Wayne)
Best Alternative Music Album (Radiohead)
Best Rock Song (Bruce)

Josh Correct Picks:
Song of the Year (Coldplay)
Best Rap ALbum (Lil Wayne)
Best Alternative Music Album (Radiohead)
Best Rock Song (Bruce)
Best Rap Song (Lollipop)

I may have to get that Plant/Krauss album on GP.

If you like Jay-Z and Coldplay then there is no way you won't like this mash-up disc. I couldn't find a bad track on the whole album. The main concept behind a mash-up is taking the music of one artist and the vocal track of another artist and creating a totally new track. This disc has some of the best mash-ups you will ever hear.

Here are three of my favorite tracks:

"Life Of Clocks"

"Take The Hill"

"Miss Trouble"

Bonn-a-who?

Is it just me or is the Bonnaroo lineup weak this year? I hope they have a couple surprises up their sleeve.

Ever since I went to Bonnaroo in '04 ('05?) I look at the lineups and wish I had the time/money/brain cells left to do it again. But looking at this years artist list...I could care less.

Sorry hippies

Album You Should Own By Now - Colin Munroe

Colin Munroe - Colin Munroe Is The Unsung Hero

Who?....Colin Munroe, that's who.

His album kinda sounds like JT [Future Sexx/Love Sounds] (minus) wanting to take E and go to a rave (plus) "Pop-y" beats (plus) the satisfaction of telling all your friends you heard him first and he is "so last week"

Colin Munroe started getting some buzz for his amazing remix of Kanye Wests' song "Flashing Lights"

My two favorite tracks from this album are -

"Piano Lessons" (Feat. Joell Ortiz)

"Will I Stay" (Feat. Wale & Dallas Austin)

The best part of this album is that it's free. Not in that all albums are free *wink wink* kinda way, it's actually 100% free

You can download it HERE
